Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement marking nine years since the last time the federal minimum wage increased to $7.25:

"Today marks nine years since hard-working Americans earning the federal minimum wage had their last pay raise. A Democratic Congress acted to deliver bigger paychecks to working men and women trying to make ends meet, but the GOP Congress has put the bank accounts of the special interest ahead of the wages of working families.

"Again and again, Washington Republicans have abandoned hard-working families drowning beneath rising costs of living in favor of an agenda to further enrich the wealthy and well-connected. Today, a full-time minimum wage worker is unable to afford to rent a small, two-bedroom apartment anywhere in the United States. Republicans' failed trickle down policies have left the American people with a raw deal, jeopardizing our children's future and the future of our economy.

"Democrats are offering A Better Deal for the people, with the Better Jobs, Better Wages and Better Future they deserve. We will continue to work tirelessly to raise the minimum wage and invest in good paying jobs so that hard-working American families can succeed in the 21st Century economy."
