Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in recognition of the 78th anniversary of Social Security:
“When President Franklin Roosevelt made Social Security the law of the land 78 years ago, our country’s leaders made a bedrock promise to the American people: that a lifetime of work will be rewarded with the peace of mind, certainty, and sense of security of a stable retirement.
“Since its inception, Social Security has stood as a source of protection for millions of America’s seniors and families. Alongside Medicare, Medicaid, and now, the Affordable Care Act, it remains a cornerstone of economic security for the middle class. This is no time for a Republican budget that slashes Social Security or takes away seniors’ hard-earned retirement protections. This is the time to work together to defend Social Security for today’s seniors and for future generations.
“Nearly eight decades ago, Democrats created Social Security; over the years, Democrats have preserved and strengthened Social Security; now and in the years to come, Democrats will always act to protect Social Security and safeguard the rights of our nation’s seniors.”
