Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today to mark the 66th anniversary of Israel's Independence Day, which starts at sundown this evening:

"Each Israeli Independence Day, we celebrate the birth, honor the growth, and admire the stunning success and perseverance of the Jewish state. For 66 years, Israel's people have faced down threats to its existence – while building a thriving, dynamic, innovative economy. Israel's families have confronted fear and the persistent threat of war – while making deserts bloom and cities thrive. Israel's soldiers have kept watch over their country's communities – while maintaining the everlasting hope that Israel would one day know the blessings of peace and security.

"The unbreakable bonds between the United States and Israel remain rooted in our shared values, our common ideals and mutual interests. Our unshakable friendship is founded on our united commitment to the secure future of a Jewish and democratic state of Israel.

"Israel's ability to succeed and thrive is a stirring reminder that Israel is, as President Kennedy once said, ‘the child of hope and the home of the brave.' Each and every day, Israel makes real the promise of its founders – to create a safe haven, in the historic homeland of the Jewish people. On this Israeli Independence Day, let us remember that the establishment of the state of Israel stands as one of the greatest achievements of the 20th century, and let us hope for Israel's continued progress in the 21st century, from generation to generation."
