San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement commemorating the 45th anniversary of the signing of the landmark Clean Water Act:
“Since 1972, the groundbreaking Clean Water Act has safeguarded and sustained the water that our children drink, the food we eat and the environment we cherish.  For 45 years, this landmark legislation has made extraordinary progress in protecting the health and well-being of families and communities across the country.
“Yet, from day one, the Trump Administration has shown nothing but contempt for clean water, clean air and clean energy by waging war on our environmental protection initiatives.  From pulling out of the Paris Climate Accord to signing reckless executive orders that undermine the protections that keep our communities safe, this White House has consistently put the health of families and the environment in grave jeopardy.  In their rush to help out polluters and their dirty energy agenda, this Administration has also cruelly trampled over the interests of hunters, anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts who rely on a healthy and sustainable environment.
“Democrats will continue to fight the Trump Administration’s short-sighted, dangerous attacks on our nation’s waterways and environmental protection initiatives.  While we commemorate this important milestone, we must also remember that the responsibility to protect the beauty of God’s creation is not the work of a single day but instead a constant effort to ensure that our children and our grandchildren have access to the clean air and clean water we all rely on.”
