San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the late San Francisco Mayor George Moscone. Tomorrow, November 27, 2008 marks the 30th anniversary of Mayor Moscone’s assassination.

"While George Moscone’s life was tragically cut short, he will forever be remembered as a visionary leader who helped to usher in an era of compassion, hope and opportunity for all San Franciscans. Whether fighting for the impoverished and for small businesses as a member of the Board of Supervisors, enacting the California school lunch program while serving in the State Senate, or making city government more open and responsive as our mayor, George Moscone threw open the doors of opportunity to all of our citizens.

"Throughout his long service to California, George Moscone was in the forefront of the fight for civil rights. As the first truly progressive Mayor, his legacy is one of inclusiveness; he was the first to appoint large number of women, gays and lesbians, and racial minorities to public boards and commissions.

"Thirty years may have passed since that horrific day when Mayor Moscone was taken from us, but his legacy lives on in the new generation of leaders he nurtured and in the hearts of all San Franciscans who live in a city of hope and of respect that Mayor Moscone helped to build.

"Mayor Moscone’s wife, Gina, and their children can be proud of indelible mark he has left on the city he loved so much."
