Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the 2015 U.S. Census Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance report:
“The 2015 Census Bureau report shows strong progress for hard-working Americans across the country. Last year, families saw the largest percentage increase in household income in almost 50 years, 3.5 million Americans climbed out of poverty, and the uninsured rate continued to reach historic lows. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, 20 million previously uninsured Americans are enjoying the newfound personal and financial security of quality, affordable health coverage – and California led the way with the nation’s largest decrease in the uninsured rate.
“The report’s findings underline the value of the middle-class economics championed by Congressional Democrats and President Obama. As we celebrate the news of rising incomes and falling uninsured rates, we also recognize that more can and should be done to build on this progress, raise wages, and create an economy that works for everyone. Yet again and again, this Republican Congress has tried to empower their special interest friends instead of working to strengthen hard-working Americans.
“House Democrats will keep fighting to secure our nation, secure our democracy, and secure our future. Republicans should join Democrats to create good-paying jobs and bring bigger paychecks to all Americans so they can buy a home, send their children to college, and save for retirement. We must continue to make progress in creating a stronger America for everyone.”
