San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released this statement following reports of a terrorist attack in the diplomatic quarter of Kabul, which claimed the lives of at least 80 people and injured hundreds more:

"Today, the American people stand in solidarity with the people of Afghanistan in the face of this heinous attack, carried out during the Holy Month of Ramadan. We mourn the losses of those killed, and send our thoughts and prayers to their families, the wounded and those still anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones.

"This despicable attack – targeting the men and women working to build a stronger, safer future for Afghanistan – earns our most forceful condemnation. Brutal terrorist attacks will be met with a smart and swift response, and we are proud to stand with our Afghan partners to reject the vile and violent ideologies and tactics of terrorist groups.

"May the people of Afghanistan find some solace in knowing that the American people share in their sorrow at this difficult time."
