San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced he was directing the Defense Department to suspend its clawback of enlistment bonuses paid to California National Guard soldiers:

“Secretary Carter’s decision to order the Defense Department to suspend its clawback of Californians’ decade-old enlistment bonuses is welcome news.  However, we must work to permanently lift the shadow of these clawbacks and address the burden on those who have already been forced to return bonuses they accepted in good faith.

“When there was a meager attempt to address this issue in 2014, Republicans removed the provision rather than incur a budget score.  Now, Republicans are hiding behind completely inadequate fig-leaf language in the pending Defense Authorization bill that will not even take effect until 2027.

“The heroes who served our country in uniform deserve every bonus and benefit they received in good faith.  We all must work together to swiftly address this situation and monitor any additional issues that come up in California and other states.”
