Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on the last day of open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act marketplace in California as Covered California announced more than 364,000 new consumers have already signed up for coverage this year, a 20 percent increase above last year's total of 295,000:

"The Affordable Care Act stands as a pillar of health and economic security for millions of Californians and Americans across the country. Since it began, the ACA has lowered the uninsured rate in California by over 50 percent, giving millions of families health security, and freedom from the fear that an unexpected medical expense will lead to financial ruin.

"California is a shining example of the lower health costs and increased coverage that are possible when leaders are committed to health care progress instead of health care sabotage. Millions of Americans are needlessly suffering because of their state's senseless refusal to expand Medicaid, and the Trump Administration's cruel efforts to push affordable, dependable health coverage out of their grasp.

"Whether signing up for a new plan or making changes to existing coverage, Californians should use this last remaining day of open enrollment to ensure they have the benefits and protections they and their families need to stay healthy and thrive. House Democrats will continue to oppose Republicans' outrageous health care sabotage as we fight For The People to lower the cost of health care and the price of prescription drugs, protect people with pre-existing conditions and advance progress for all Americans."
