Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released this statement following the decision of a U.S. District Judge in Texas in the case of the State of Texas v. United States of America:
"The President's actions fall well within the clear constitutional and legal authority of his office, and the well-established precedent set by previous presidents, including Republican Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush. In fact, every president since Eisenhower has used his authority to refine our immigration system in service of our national interest. Clearly, the legal authority and precedents of previous presidents seem not to apply in the eyes of a Texas judge.
"The Department of Justice, legal and immigration experts, and history support the President's executive actions – and the U.S. District Court decision erroneously blocks the President from taking steps to fix our broken immigration system in a manner that is consistent with previous presidents, strengthens our economy, keeps communities safe, and honors our values.
"How sad for our impacted DREAMers and their families, how necessary it is for an immediate appeal of this ruling. I am confident such an appeal will succeed."
