Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement on the September jobs report:
"The weak September jobs report is stark evidence that bold action is urgently needed to address the health and economic catastrophe in our country. Long term unemployment is surging. Last month alone, 280,000 teachers and education workers lost their jobs – a total of 800,000 fewer education jobs compared to this time last year. Lives, livelihoods and the life of our democracy are in the balance.
"Four months ago, Democrats presented the solutions to crushing the virus and stimulating the economy with the Heroes Act. We have repeatedly compromised, offering solution after solution to meet the health and economic needs of the American people, including yesterday by passing an updated Heroes Act that averts crisis for schools, small businesses, restaurants, performance spaces, airline workers and more. Republicans must meet us halfway to pass a bill worthy of the scale of this crisis.
"With over 209,000 Americans having died, more than seven million infected and tens of millions facing job loss, financial insecurity, hunger and homelessness, it is imperative that we act."
