Washington, D.C. — Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 142,000 jobs. With businesses adding 118,000 jobs last month, September represents the 67th consecutive month of private sector job growth:

"Last month's jobs report shows we have more work to do to move our economy forward. There is clearly more Congress can and must do to create jobs, raise wages and meet the needs of America's hard-working families.

"Republicans must abandon the Calendar of Chaos they have planned for the American people this fall and come together with Democrats to have a timetable of progress. We must negotiate an Omnibus funding bill that responsibly ends the destructive sequester caps, strengthens our national defense and invests in America. We must pass a robust, long-term transportation bill worthy of the 21st century and reauthorize the Export-Import Bank that empowers American manufacturers to compete and succeed overseas. And we must act to honor the full faith and credit of the United States of America.

"Hard-working families cannot afford more pointless crises from the Republican Congress. It is absolutely shameful that 151 Republicans voted this week to shut down the government rather than allow women to access affordable family planning and life-saving preventive health care. Our economy needs better than Republicans' toxic irresponsibility. It's time for Republicans to join a meaningful dialogue with Democrats to move our country forward."
