Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the September jobs report issued today by the Department of Labor.

â€Å"Over the past few months, our nation's economy has stepped back from the brink, but our work is far from over. As today's jobs report shows, it is critical to our future to get Americans back to work.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, efforts to rescue the financial system, the Cash for Clunkers initiative, and other actions have stemmed the tide of a depression and started us on the road to recovery. While the rate of job losses has started to decline - from an average of 673,000 per month in the final three months of the Bush Administration to 256,000 during each of the past three months, we will not be satisfied until we have job growth.

â€Å"Congress and President Obama are working every day to reinforce the key pillars of economic growth. The House passed a clean energy bill to create jobs and invest in new technologies. The Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act - passed two weeks ago - will help to put college in reach of every student. In the coming months, we will pass health insurance reform that lowers costs, improves access, helps keep families from declaring bankruptcy because of staggering medical bills, and ensures quality, affordable health care for all Americans.

â€Å"There are still too many Americans who are unemployed and too many workers fighting to make ends meet without the security of a regular paycheck. Members of Congress must work together with the Obama Administration to strengthen our economic foundation and lay the building blocks for growth in the years to come.â€
