Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the Senate voted 65-34 to open debate on a bipartisan measure to renew emergency unemployment insurance:

"Today, the Senate took an important step forward on behalf of the millions of Americans reeling from the loss of their emergency unemployment insurance.

"Renewing this essential lifeline will restore an urgently needed measure of economic security to millions of American families, help hundreds of thousands of struggling veterans, and create jobs. More than two million Americans have been cut off from the emergency unemployment insurance they rely on to pay their bills as they search for work – a figure that grows by 72,000 every week.

"House Republicans must overcome their spectacular indifference to the struggles of these Americans, and work with Democrats to renew emergency unemployment insurance without any further delay."
