Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after Senate Republicans blocked consideration of the Paycheck Fairness Act, legislation to ensure women receive equal pay for equal work:
"Today, Senate Republicans voted for the second time this year against giving women workers the tools they need to ensure that they receive equal pay for equal work. By failing to stand up for women, Senate Republicans once again refused to put American workers – and middle-class families – first.
"To jumpstart the middle class, we must end this gross injustice. It is unacceptable that Senate Republicans believe that women in America should continue to make, on average, only 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. By the time she turns 65, the average woman will have lost about $434,000 to the earnings gap.
"America's mothers and daughters deserve better than Republicans' relentless special interest obstructionism. Democrats will continue to lead the charge for equality in our economy because when women succeed, America succeeds."
