Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after every Senate Republican voted to block consideration of the Paycheck Fairness Act.  Under Democratic majorities in the 110th and 111th Congresses, the House voted to pass this legislation, but Senate Republicans voted to block the measure:

“Today, all Senate Republicans voted to reject the core American value of equality.  By halting progress on the Paycheck Fairness Act, they halted progress for businesses, consumers, and our economy.  They undermined the notion that everyone deserves an honest day’s pay for a full day’s work, regardless of gender.

“Securing a fair shot for women in the workplace is critical to ensuring prosperity for our nation.  That’s why the Paycheck Fairness Act stands at the center of House Democrats’ economic agenda for women and families – ‘When Women Succeed, America Succeeds’ – built on three pillars: fair pay, paid family and medical leave, and affordable, quality child care.  To unleash the power of women in our economy, it’s time to adopt these initiatives without further delay.

“The promise of equal pay for equal work should not be a partisan issue – it should be a matter of common sense and fairness, an essential step for the security of our families, the growth of our economy, and the strength of our middle class.  Unfortunately, Senate Republicans disagree.  But the advocates of justice will not stop fighting.  We will keep working until the Paycheck Fairness Act is no longer a source of division, but the law of the land.”
