Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after Senate Republicans blocked consideration of the Cybersecurity Act of 2012, a bill to protect our nation from cyber attacks:

“By preventing further consideration of the Cybersecurity Act, Senate Republicans have neglected our solemn duty to enhance America’s security. In the face of real and pressing cyber threats, this Republican action is simply irresponsible, and we must come together to enact a bill that builds a safer future for all Americans.

“Democrats support meaningful legislation to bolster our cyber security and confront new threats. We must enact measures that safeguard our critical infrastructure from attack, while protecting Americans’ right to privacy and our civil liberties.

“As Members of Congress, our first responsibility is to ensure the security of the American people. In the 21st century, defending our nation from cyber attacks is a central component of meeting our obligations to preserve and strengthen the safety of our families and communities.”
