Pelosi Statement on Senate Passage of USMCA with Democrats’ Improvements
Contact: Speaker’s Press Office,
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement after the Senate followed the House in passing the USMCA implementation legislation:
“The original USMCA draft put forward by the Trump Administration left American workers exposed to losing their jobs to Mexico, included unacceptable provisions to lock in high prescription drug prices and fell short of key environmental standards. Above all, the Trump Administration had failed to secure the concrete, rigorous enforcement mechanisms essential to hold our trade partners accountable to their promises.
“Today, the Senate passed a USMCA that has been transformed by Democrats’ leadership for American workers, American patients and the environment. The flimsy enforcement proposed by the Trump Administration has been rewritten by Democrats into the strongest enforcement mechanisms of any U.S. trade agreement.
“While the passage of the USMCA with Democrats’ improvements is good news for the American people, President Trump’s failed China trade strategy has inflicted deep, long-term damage to American agriculture and rattled our economy in exchange for more of the promises that Beijing has been breaking for years. Meanwhile, the ‘Grim Reaper’ Senator McConnell refuses to allow votes on House-passed bills to raise the minimum wage for America’s workers, negotiate lower prescription drug prices for American seniors and families and many more key pieces of legislation to strengthen the health and financial security of the American people.
“Democrats will continue our work to legislate For The People and raise a drumbeat across America for the GOP Senate to act on our bills.”
