Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia upheld its earlier ruling in the Mazars v. Trump case that the House has the authority to obtain the President's financial records to conduct its oversight of the executive branch:
"Once again, the Courts have resoundingly reaffirmed the Congress's authority to conduct oversight and consider legislation on behalf of the American people.
"In their great wisdom, our Founders crafted a Constitution based on a system of separation of powers: three co-equal branches acting as checks on each other. Sadly, we have a President who does not believe in the separation of powers that is the genius of our Constitution and the foundation of our republic.
"The House will continue to conduct oversight for the people and defend our democracy."
