Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in recognition of Rosh Hashanah, which will begin this evening at sundown:

"Rosh Hashanah offers an opportunity for the millions of Jewish families across America and around the world to rejoice with loved ones and reflect on the blessings of the past year. As the celebration of the High Holy Days begins, Congress joins all Americans in wishing our Jewish communities health and happiness in the new year.

"This holy season, Jewish families look ahead after a challenging past year: a deadly pandemic, an economic catastrophe, extreme weather disasters, a democracy in crisis and more. Compounding this hardship, Jewish communities across the nation have also been forced to endure a disturbing rise in antisemitic attacks, born of the same bigotry and hate that has targeted Jewish communities for centuries. Indeed, our nation is in awe of the strength and resilience of the Jewish people, and we join them in embracing the promise of a brighter 5782.

"Let us draw inspiration from Judaism's beautiful call to repair the world and build a fairer future for generations to come. In that generous spirit, President Biden and Democrats in Congress are hard at work advancing a bold agenda to crush this vicious virus, fight the scourge of poverty and lift up working people. And we remain committed to combating hatred and bigotry in all forms.

"On behalf of the United States Congress, I wish all people of the Jewish faith a sweet and joyful new year. Shana tovah u'metukah!"
