Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in recognition of Rosh Hashanah, which begins this evening at sundown:
"Tonight, millions of Jewish families in America and around the world will observe Rosh Hashanah and the beginning of the Days of Awe. For the Jewish community, these High Holy Days are a time of spiritual reflection and renewal, and an opportunity for families to look forward with hope to a new year filled with health, peace and happiness.
"This Rosh Hashanah comes as our nation confronts extraordinary challenges, from the unprecedented coronavirus crisis to the dangerous surge in acts of xenophobia and anti-Semitism to the scourge of systemic racism and injustice that continues to tear apart our communities and undermine our democracy. As Americans join their Jewish friends and neighbors to reflect on the year that has passed and the challenges before us, we must embrace the year ahead with a renewed commitment to the bedrock Jewish duty to repair the world, to pursue justice and to secure peace for our children and for generations to come.
"At this time of celebration and introspection, let us come together in hope that this Rosh Hashanah brings a year of good health and prosperity for the Jewish community, for America and for the world. Shana tovah u'metukah – may you have a joyous and sweet new year."
