San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after Congressman Charlie Gonzalez announced he would not seek re-election in 2012:

“Congressman Charlie Gonzalez is a dynamic leader and a strategic legislator. As Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Charlie has been a great advocate for America's Hispanic community, and indeed all Americans. He brought to Congress substantial judicial experience and represented his hometown of San Antonio admirably. Whether from his seat on the Energy and Commerce Committee, his important work on the Census and on electoral reform, his advocacy for civil rights, and his commitment to diversity in federal courts, Charlie will leave a legacy of great public service.

“Charlie's departure will mark the end of an era: for a half-century, the Gonzalez family has represented his constituents with distinction in Congress. Henry B. Gonzalez, a CHC founder and the first Hispanic elected to Congress from Texas, began the family tradition of service on behalf of justice, economic opportunity, and progress for all Americans; Charlie picked up the mantle and moved it forward.

“The legacy of the Gonzalez family name is well known and will always be respected in San Antonio, Texas, and indeed the nation. Charlie will be missed by his colleagues, and many of us who also consider him a dear friend. We wish him and his family the best as he moves on to new challenges.”
