Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the announcement that former Senator George Mitchell will resign his post as the Obama Administration’s special Middle East envoy:

“Senator George Mitchell’s commitment and achievements reflect a career spent serving the interests, values, and future of the American people. When asked to serve, he answered the call – working as Senate Majority Leader, helping to bring peace to Northern Ireland, striving for an end to violence and a lasting peace among Israel, the Palestinians, and their neighbors.

“Senator Mitchell worked to make history and progress, whether in Northern Ireland or the Middle East; despite setbacks and frustrations, he maintained an enduring faith in the power of leaders to make peace and build a brighter future. He believed, as he once said, that ‘conflicts are created, conducted and sustained by human beings. They can be ended by human beings.’

“We thank Senator Mitchell for his leadership, passion, and determination in the drive for Middle East peace, and we wish him well in his future endeavors.”
