Pelosi Statement on Republican Budget Proposal

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement regarding House Republicans’ budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2017:

“A budget is a statement of our values. With their latest budget proposal, House Republicans have made their values very clear: strengthen the special interests, abandon seniors and hard-working families.

“The Republican budget plan would do savage damage to good-paying jobs, education and infrastructure in America. It would increase poverty and erode our nation’s promise of basic economic security for all Americans, continuing to stack the deck for the wealthiest and well-connected at the expense of everyone else. The Republican Congress has grown so cruelly dysfunctional that the Tea Party wing of the House GOP already opposes the budget as insufficiently radical – even with $6 trillion in cuts and ending the Medicare guarantee.

“Once again, Republicans are trying to take us back to the radical trickle down agenda that shattered our economy and hollowed out the wages of middle-class Americans. Hard-working families deserve a budget that invests in their future, and creates a level-playing field for them and their children to succeed. Democrats will continue to press for a budget that creates jobs and raises the paychecks of the American people, while reducing the deficit in a balanced and responsible way.”
