Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in response to reports that Speaker Boehner told the House Republican Conference, in a private meeting today, that he will abandon efforts to prevent student loan rates from doubling on July 1st:

“Today, Speaker Boehner confirmed to his Conference what was already obvious: Republicans are not interested in working with Democrats to find a responsible path that would prevent the doubling of interest rates on America’s students. As the clock ticks closer to the deadline for millions with student loans, Republicans have continued to make it clear that they were never interested in helping students in the first place.

“Democrats led the largest investment in student aid in our nation’s history and we will continue to work to put higher education in reach for millions of young people.”
