Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the recent tornadoes in the South and Midwest that have left at least 28 people dead and dozens more injured.  The states impacted include Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, and Kansas:

“Our thoughts and prayers rest with the people and communities caught in the path of these devastating storms – the loved ones of those who lost their lives, the families who lost their homes, and the men and women who lost everything.

“In the wake of this natural disaster, the commitment of Members of Congress and the federal government must remain clear and firm: we will stand by the people affected by these tornadoes in word and deed, and offer our full and unflinching support to state and local authorities.  We must provide every resource and do everything in our power to help them recover and rebuild.

“Even in the midst of the destruction and fear, Americans have been inspired by the strength and spirit of the volunteers, the first responders, and the search and rescue teams stepping forward to help their neighbors and complete strangers.  Inspired by their example, we will stand united and unwavering in responding to this terrible tragedy.”
