Pelosi Statement on President’s Announcement on Afghanistan Troop Levels

San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after President Obama announced 5,500 American troops will stay in Afghanistan after 2016:

"I appreciate the President informing the public this morning about his intentions to maintain a U.S. troop presence in Afghanistan after 2016.

"President Obama makes the decision to keep American ground troops in harm's way with the utmost caution and solemnity. Clearly, the President sees a vital security need that requires the continued presence of American troops. I look forward to a high-level briefing on the necessity of these steps when Congress returns to session.

"Once again, we are reminded of the incredible sacrifices our men and women in uniform make to keep us safe. We owe them our eternal gratitude, and we will continue to work to bring our brave men and women home."
