Pelosi Statement on President Obama’s Speech on Libya

March 28, 2011

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement tonight after President Obama delivered his speech on Libya:

“Tonight, President Obama spoke to the nation about limited American participation in international efforts to protect innocent Libyans from the 'show no mercy' threat by Qaddafi. Action was taken to stave off a humanitarian crisis saving thousands of lives. NATO and our international partners, including Arab nations, have sent a clear message to the Qaddafi regime that violence against civilians will not be tolerated. NATO has already taken command of the ‘no fly zone’ enforcement and on Wednesday, as the President said tonight, U.S. will transfer to NATO the lead for protecting Libyan citizens.

“Members of Congress will receive a classified briefing from the Administration on our future limited role in Libya this week and congressional committees will hold oversight hearings. U.S. actions in Libya will be strengthened by continued consultation with Congress.”

“I commend the President for his courage in taking this action and salute our men and women in uniform for their part in saving lives.”
