Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader released the following statement today on President Obama’s address outlining our country’s support for political reform, democratic governance, human rights, and economic development throughout the Middle East:
“Today, President Obama laid out a bold vision that strengthens reform, democracy, and economic growth throughout the Middle East and North Africa. His address made it clear: the United States stands with people demanding their basic human rights, striving for prosperity, and marching for a future defined by peace and security across the region. He strongly reaffirmed the unwavering support of the United States for Israel and our commitment to work for a two-state solution.
“In my travels, young people in the Middle East have made clear that they are weary of war and tired of the leaders who are failing to build a brighter future for them. The President made it clear to those leaders that the aspirations of those young people cannot be ignored and that they must recognize the change that is happening in the world. Young people will continue to hold their leaders accountable, including organizing through new media, and in doing so, will make the world more democratic.
“I commend the President for his strong statement of what role America will play in that change. America – led by President Obama working with Congress – will stand with all who are opening the doors of hope and progress around the globe. President Obama’s comments underscore that commitment, strengthen our national security, and hopefully, help move us toward peace in the Middle East.
“The world is changing but America’s commitment to promoting peace and democracy will not.”
