Havana, Cuba – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on President Obama’s historic visit to Cuba. Pelosi traveled to Cuba as part of the Presidential delegation and is the top Democrat on the bipartisan, bicameral Congressional delegation that joined the President.

“The President’s historic trip to Cuba marks more momentous progress in restoring open relations between the United States and Cuba. My congratulations are with President Obama for his bold, forward-looking leadership moving our nations beyond old enmities and toward a new and productive dialogue.

“We have an opportunity to break free of the past and build new bonds between our peoples. We must continue to strengthen our diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties, foster greater dialogue, and advance goodwill – including through our mutual love of sports. There is general agreement in our bipartisan, bicameral Congressional delegation that we must lift the embargo, end the travel ban, and open new modes of communication between the U.S. and Cuba.

“Our delegation has been warmly greeted by all we have met in Cuba. We are grateful for the warmth of their welcome, and we share in their hope for fresh progress in the shared goals of the Cuban people and the American people.”
