Washington, D.C. — Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after President-elect Biden announced key nominations for key positions on his team to confront the climate crisis:
"President-elect Biden, with these historic nominations, is sending a clear and resounding message: the climate crisis is real, and the Biden-Harris Administration is committed to bold and urgent action to combat it. These nominees for key energy and environmental positions will be transformational in Democrats' mission to achieve a clean energy future — and to do so in a way that is just, equitable, sustainable and science-based.
"Congresswoman Haaland is a respected leader of great experience, empathy and excellence, who brings a unique perspective, as an indigenous woman, an advocate and organizer, and a Member of Congress — where she serves as Vice Chair of the House Natural Resources Committee and Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on National Parks, Forest and Public Lands.
"Former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm is a proven, persistent champion of green technologies and American manufacturing, who will be a powerful and productive force in the Administration's work to reduce pollution, improve energy efficiency and combat the climate crisis, all while creating good-paying American jobs and ensuring America's global preeminence in the green technologies of the future.
"As the first-ever National Climate Advisor, Gina McCarthy brings great mastery of the climate crisis landscape and essential experience in organizing and mobilizing for change. As the architect of landmark climate action under President Obama, including on efforts to raise fuel economy standards, limit dangerous pollution from dirty producers and protect public health, she will now help lead the charge to advance a healthy, sustainable future for our children.
"Michael Regan is a champion of environmental justice, with a proven track record of success in transitioning to a net-zero emission economy, reducing dangerous emissions and cleaning up toxic pollutants. His leadership of EPA will elevate the priority of environmental justice and drive great progress to eliminate disparities facing low-income communities and communities of color."
