Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the passing of Mervin Field, founder of the Field Poll news service:
"Mervin Field's ingenuity, his charisma and wit, his transformative and innovative leadership changed California and our world. His deep and abiding sense of purpose strengthened civil society for hard-working Americans. By improving the research and analysis that informs public policy, Merv performed a public service that improved lives and our great democracy.
"During World War II, Merv upheld the American values he cherished through service in the U.S. Merchant Marine. After the war, it became his life's work to make our democratic institutions more responsive to the needs of citizens they serve. Merv was a walking encyclopedia of California political knowledge and he transformed the practice of polling with his innovative approach to opinion research.
"Across California, elected officials from both sides of the aisle have relied on Merv's expertise, delighted in his humor, benefitted from his wisdom, and deeply cherished his friendship. His loss is felt by many throughout the Golden State and beyond. We hope that it is a comfort to his children and grandchildren that so many share their sadness at this difficult time."
