Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today on the passing of Gap founder and philanthropist Donald Fisher:

"Don Fisher was an innovative business leader and a civic-minded philanthropist. Above all, Don was a proud son of San Francisco, and his work for the common good is seen in every corner of our city. Growing a single Gap store into a multinational and multi-brand corporation, Don used his remarkable business success for the good of his community and our nation.

"Don will be long outlived by his legacy to the economy, the arts, education, the environment and sports. Visitors and natives alike will continue to enjoy his gift of 'Cupid's Bow' on the Embarcadero; the Presidio and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art will continue to thrive because of his vision and his service; the Giants remain San Francisco's baseball team because of his dedication. Children who attend stronger schools, and become more successful adults because of them, will owe Don a piece of their gratitude.

"Don's proudest accomplishment was his family, and his children and grandchildren will carry on his work and generosity. I hope it is a comfort to Don's wife, Doris, his three sons, his grandchildren, and the many others that loved him that so many are mourning his loss and praying for them at this sad time."
