Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the passing of former Vice President Walter Mondale:
"Vice President Walter Mondale was an icon of honor and decency, whose principled and progressive leadership made America more fair, equal and strong. His passing is a sad and great loss for our nation.
"Whether as Senator, Vice President or senior statesman, Vice President Mondale was a champion for justice in America. Throughout his lifetime of dedicated public service, he was a voice for those who were too often voiceless, particularly communities of color and working families. His fierce and successful advocacy for the Fair Housing Act leaves an enduring legacy that has lifted up millions. Vice President Mondale was also a champion for peace, whose trusted leadership as part of the Carter-Mondale Administration helped deliver the landmark peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.
"It was my honor to serve as the Convention Host Committee Chair for the 1984 DNC convention in San Francisco, where Vice President Mondale was nominated for President of the United States. His soaring acceptance speech inspires us still: ‘America is a future each generation must enlarge; a door each generation must open; a promise each generation must keep.' Now, with his passing, a new generation of Americans must take up his mission to advance a future of justice and progress for all. There, he also made history as he electrified the nation by naming Geraldine Ferraro as the first woman Vice Presidential candidate.
"May it be a comfort to Walter's sons Ted and William, to Louis, Amanda, Berit, Charlotte, Cassandra and Danielle, and the entire Mondale family to know that he has now been reunited with his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Joan, and his adored daughter Eleanor. May it also be a comfort to his loved ones that so many across America mourn with and pray for them at this difficult time."
