Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today following House passage of Democratic amendments to the Republican Continuing Resolution that protect America’s communities by preventing Republicans cuts that would have resulted in 3,000 fewer police officers and 2,300 fewer firefighters nationwide:

“With the Republican cuts, nothing is sacred – not even the safety of the American people.

“Throwing police and firefighters off the job isn’t going to solve the deficit. That’s why House Democrats took action today to restore funding that will keep police on the beat and hire and equip our nation's firefighters. But the irresponsible Republican spending bill would still destroy 800,000 private and public-sector jobs and fails to invest in the future.

“Democrats and Republicans must work together to ensure our nation lives within its means. Democrats believe we can cut the deficit, continuing our attack on waste, fraud and abuse, create jobs, and grow our economy.”
