Washington, D.C. — Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on open enrollment through the Health Insurance Marketplaces for 2017, which began on November 1:
“Thanks to the landmark Affordable Care Act, more than 20 million previously uninsured Americans now have quality, affordable health coverage. Starting today, families across America will be able to visit the Health Insurance Marketplaces and enroll in health coverage for 2017. For another year, with the beginning of the ACA’s fourth Open Enrollment period, millions will continue to have access to the coverage – and health security – needed to pursue their dreams.
“Thanks to the ACA, millions and millions of Americans will enjoy dependable and affordable health care options through the ACA Marketplaces for 2017. In fact, about 85 percent of those in the Marketplaces will receive tax credits that will protect them from rate increases. Indeed, for 2017, more than 70 percent of consumers can find Marketplace plans for less than $75 per month per person, after tax credits. Also, because of this landmark law, people with pre-existing conditions can no longer be denied coverage, young adults can remain on their parents’ health insurance until age 26, women no longer have to pay more than men for the same coverage, and there are no annual and lifetime limits on coverage.
“Due to the ACA, for the first time in our nation’s history, less than 9 percent of Americans are uninsured. Yet, Republicans have tried – and failed – more than 60 times to undermine and repeal this landmark law. Instead of working to undermine the ACA and the health coverage of millions of Americans, Republicans should work with Democrats to help make the Marketplaces better and better ensure that Americans have the health security that they need.”
