Pelosi Statement on One Year Since the Violence in Charlottesville

Washington D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued this statement marking one year since the violence that occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia following protests by white supremacists:

"One year ago, the streets of Charlottesville, Virginia became a scene of tragedy and terror. The deadly acts of hatred and bigotry revealed to America and the world the vile and shameful reality of white supremacism in our country today. President Trump's assertions of blame ‘on both sides' ignored the abhorrent evil of white supremacism, and laid bare his and his Administration's disturbing complacency with hate-fueled speech and violence.

"Since the beginning, the President has shown an utter disdain for our values by fueling the fires of bigotry and racism. His Administration has focused the President's intolerance into a shameful, bigoted agenda that has rolled back the incredible progress we have made toward fulfilling our nation's promise of equality and opportunity. As the President continues to send dog whistles to hate groups and racists, his Administration's discriminatory policies cruelly attack the fundamental rights of immigrants, Muslims, LGBTQ individuals and servicemembers, and communities of color.

"Today, as we reflect on the tragic violence and hatred displayed on the streets of Charlottesville, we recommit ourselves to defeating bigotry, racism and hatred wherever it is found. Democrats are committed to fighting for the people, and will continue to stand firm against this Administration's dangerous tolerance of Nazis and white supremacists and their disgraceful assaults on our nation's core values of freedom and equality for all."
