San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement marking one year since the Democratic House passed H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act:

"One year ago, House Democrats took decisive action to address the growing climate crisis by passing H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act. This critical legislation requires the Trump Administration to remain in the landmark Paris Climate Accord and to fulfill its obligation to protect the American people by developing a serious plan for how the United States will meet its commitment to reduce pollution. Yet, despite the urgent need for action, Leader McConnell has sat on this legislation for 365 days, refusing to allow the Senate to take this necessary vote.

"The unprecedented coronavirus crisis is shining an even brighter light on the need to not only meet the immediate health and financial needs of American families, but to tackle the issue of climate injustice and secure the long-term sustainability and well-being of all of our communities. Guided by the leadership and vision of Chairwoman Kathy Castor and the members of the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, House Democrats are committed to developing innovative, forward-looking solutions that address the existential threat posed by the climate crisis. Combatting this threat is about protecting our public health, clean air and clean water; advancing our economy and global preeminence in green technology; defending our national security; and honoring our moral responsibility to good stewards of God's creation.

"As communities across the country deal with the growing impact of the climate crisis, a majority of the American people are demanding action. The Senate must end their outrageous, life-threatening inaction and pass the Climate Action Now Act immediately. We cannot stay silent and allow the denial of science and facts to jeopardize our planet or the clean, sustainable future our children and grandchildren deserve. The time for climate action is now!"
