Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today to mark the one-year anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti, which is tomorrow:
“One year ago, tragedy struck the heart of Haiti when an earthquake wreaked havoc and devastation across the island, took the lives of tens of thousands, and left more than a million others homeless.
“In the wake of this disaster, the United States and the global community rallied to the side of the Haitian people. In a moment demanding compassion, the generosity of the world supported the families of those who perished, treated the injured, and helped the displaced. Today, that same spirit endures, and all Americans join Haiti in marking this solemn anniversary and pledging to continue the work of recovery.
“Today, the Haitian people continue to combat a series of challenges to their health, economy, and safety – from an ongoing cholera epidemic to political violence to neighborhoods still left in ruin. On this anniversary, let us uphold our responsibility to the victims of the earthquake and to Haiti’s future. Let us rededicate ourselves to the promise made by President Obama: that Haiti would not be forgotten or forsaken.”
