San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added a total of 161,000 jobs in October, with the unemployment rate falling to 4.9 percent. With 142,000 private sector jobs being added in October, the economy has added a total of 15.5 million private sector jobs since early 2010.

"With wages rising and unemployment down, October's jobs report shows our economy continues to forge ahead. However, much more can and should be done to create more good-paying jobs and build a more secure future for hard-working Americans.

"The Republican Congress has consistently put its toxic special interest agenda ahead of real action to create jobs, raise wages and meet the needs of the American people. Instead of investing in America, Republicans have sought to end the Medicare guarantee and hand massive tax giveaways to wealthy special interests. Now, Republicans are openly promising years more of the same bitter obstruction – turning their backs on the priorities of hard-working Americans.

"Democrats have a different plan: a Congress that comes together to create more good-paying jobs through investing in infrastructure, education and innovation. To move the economy forward, we need to create a secure financial future for all Americans so they can buy a home, send their children to college, and save for retirement. House Democrats will continue to work for a stronger America that provides security and opportunity to every American."
