Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on President Obama's nominations of Inez Moore Tenenbaum to chair the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Robert S. Adler as a new commissioner of the CPSC. The President also announced his plans to strengthen the CPSC by expanding the panel from three commissioners to five and to provide it with significant additional resources.
â€Å"President Obama has made an excellent choice to lead the Consumer Product Safety Commission by nominating Inez Moore Tenenbaum, a talented attorney who has dedicated her career to improving the lives of children and families, and Robert Adler as a new commissioner. I look forward to their quick confirmation by the Senate and to working with the CPSC to protect Americans from dangerous, and sometimes deadly, consumer products.
â€Å"President Obama's initiative builds on the progress the New Direction Congress made last year when we passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which was signed into law last August. This landmark law strengthened our ability to prevent unsafe toys from being sold, to remove harmful products from store shelves, and to impose penalties on those who violate product safety laws-but strong partners are still needed at the Commission.
â€Å"Families must have the peace of mind of knowing that the toys, household products, and other items they buy for their families are safe. I look forward to working with President Obama and the CPSC to raise consumer protection standards to a level more appropriate for our global economy.â€Â
