Shanghai, China -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is leading a congressional delegation to China this week, issued the following statement today on the announcement by North Korea that it has successfully completed nuclear tests.

"If today's announcement is true, these tests would be a clear violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1718, which requires that North Korea not conduct any further nuclear tests. Such action by North Korea is unacceptable and cause for great alarm.

"These reported tests underscore the message our congressional delegation planned to deliver to top Chinese government leaders during our meetings later this week: the Chinese must use their influence to help bring North Korea to the table for the Six-Party talks. Today's announcement makes that need all the more urgent."
