Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on President Obama's announcement that he intends to nominate U.S. Attorney Loretta E. Lynch, Eastern District of New York, to serve as the next Attorney General of the United States.

"Loretta Lynch is a distinguished and dedicated public servant who has led and litigated with integrity in two administrations. In nominating Lynch to be the next Attorney General, President Obama has selected a tough and capable leader who will carry forward the banner of justice and equality in America.

"In the Eastern District of New York, Lynch has already shown her tenacity in prosecuting terrorism and corruption. We know she will bring this same energy to the fight to protect access to the ballot box, reverse the epidemic of incarceration, and ensure that fairness, opportunity and equality belongs to all Americans.

"When confirmed, the daughter of a Greensboro, North Carolina preacher active in the civil rights movement will become the first-ever African American woman Attorney General of the United States. We look forward to working with Attorney General Lynch as we build on the proud legacy of progress left by Attorney General Holder, and reaffirm the bedrock American principle of equal justice under law."
