Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after University of California President Janet Napolitano announced that she will recommend Dr. Sam Hawgood to the Board of Regents to be the next chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco:

"It is no surprise that even after reviewing hundreds of candidates, we found the perfect nominee within the ranks of UCSF itself. From his work as a researcher and teacher to his present positions as Dean of the Medical School and interim Chancellor, Dr. Sam Hawgood has embodied UCSF's culture of excellence. He is a dedicated educator, a proven leader, and a terrific choice for chancellor of UCSF.

"For more than three decades, Dr. Hawgood has been an integral part of the UCSF community. As Chancellor, he will provide an experienced and steady hand as UCSF expands its hospital and extends its global leadership in basic research.

"This university is the crown jewel of public research institutions nationwide: the top public university recipient of NIH research funds. We are excited to work with Chancellor Hawgood as he builds on the towering achievements of his predecessor, Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann, and strengthens our great university's position on the cutting edge of innovation, medicine, and scientific progress."
