San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after news reports of at least 27 deaths from an Ebola outbreak in Congo, according to the World Health Organization:
"In Congo, countless men, women and children continue to face the dire threat of a deadly Ebola outbreak. While reports indicate a growing number of confirmed Ebola cases and at least 27 suspected deaths, Republicans in Congress continue to push for a cruel rescissions package that eliminates critical funding for responding to life-threatening outbreaks.
"Republicans have scrambled to make children, seniors, working families and now global health security foot the cost for their GOP Tax Scam. It is utterly unconscionable that Republicans are insisting on brutally tight budgets for the communities who need it the most, while handing enormous giveaways to corporations and the wealthiest 1 percent.
"According to the International Federation of the Red Cross, this Ebola outbreak is far from over and the risk to neighboring countries and a larger, global epidemic remain. At this critical moment, the United States must commit to sustained and constructive leadership in this essential fight. The GOP rescissions package undermines this vital effort. Democrats will continue to fight for robust funding to combat the scourge of Ebola and other global health crises."
