Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the new report from The Commonwealth Fund on the continuing success of the Affordable Care Act:
"The Commonwealth Fund study is just the latest evidence of the overwhelming success of the Affordable Care Act. Thanks to this historic law, millions of American students, workers and families are discovering newfound health security, and the personal and economic freedom that comes with it.
"The national uninsured rate among adults ages 19 to 64 has already fallen from 20 percent to 15 percent. Sixty percent of the 9.5 million newly covered adults are under 35, and another 60 percent have already used their insurance to visit a doctor or fill a prescription. In states that expanded Medicaid, the uninsured rate for poor adults dropped from 28 percent to 17 percent – compared to 38 percent to 36 percent in states that have refused. And California continues to lead the way for the nation, with the largest percentage decline of uninsured rate of adults of all states with data.
"This landmark law is strengthening the physical and economic health of our nation as never before, ensuring that health care will be a right, not a privilege, for all Americans. Republicans should stop trying to dismantle this success, and come together with Democrats to strengthen and improve its historic protections."
