Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released this statement in recognition of National Voter Registration Day, which was created to educate eligible voters, promote voter registration, and encourage registered voters to vote in all elections:

"Each National Voter Registration Day, we celebrate one of the greatest rights and responsibilities Americans have by reminding our loved ones, neighbors, and friends to register to vote.

"Voting is a civic duty and it starts with registering to vote. By registering, citizens can ensure their families and communities have the resources needed to flourish. By registering, citizens celebrate the freedom we cherish, honor the legacy we've inherited, and join in building a better, more hopeful future for our democracy. It is vital that Congress pass a renewed, strengthened, and bipartisan Voting Rights Act and work to ensure that every voter can cast a ballot and every vote is counted as cast, in every election.

"Congress must make it easier to register and easier to vote. So too should every American honor and exercise the right to vote that so many generations have given so much to defend. Together, we can dismantle barriers to the ballot box and overcome new and pernicious efforts at voter suppression. This National Voter Registration Day, let us rededicate ourselves to protecting and using the right to vote in every community."
