Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement in honor of National Native American Heritage Month, which is observed in November:

"National Native American Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary contributions that Native Americans and Alaska Natives have made to our country and the importance of their long and vibrant history for all Americans.

"Native American heritage is defined by courage, vitality, and resilience. Despite generations of injustice and persecution, America's Tribal Nations have bravely served our country with distinction, making us safer and stronger. They have long shown tireless leadership in environmental protection and conservation, ensuring that our natural wonders will be the birthright of all our children for generations to come. Whether through their political activism, their military service or their cultural heritage, the inspiring legacies of generations of tribal cultures makes the rich fabric of American society all the more beautiful.

"To honor this vibrant heritage, we must uphold our legal and moral obligations to Tribal Nations. House Democrats stand committed to not only right the injustices of history, but to honor tribal sovereignty and work with Native communities to build a more healthy, equal and just future for all."
