Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after meeting with leaders of the Syrian Opposition, including President Amhad Jarba, earlier today:

"It was a privilege to receive President Jarba of the Syrian Opposition Coalition earlier today during his first official visit to the United States. We had a wide ranging discussion on the situation on the ground in Syria, and the need to end the horrific conflict that has claimed thousands of lives, and displaced millions of Syrians.

"President Jarba shared his appreciation for the assistance provided by the United States and the international community in the face of the brutality of the Assad regime, and described his views on what is needed to ensure a better future for all Syrians. We agreed that a negotiated political solution is the only way to end this conflict, and he reiterated the opposition's willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue. The President also reaffirmed the opposition's commitment to preventing Syria from falling into the hands of Hezbollah and Al-Qaeda extremists.

"With the partnership of the international community, we must continue to work to end the violence and advance the Geneva framework to achieve an inclusive and democratic Syria where Syrians of all backgrounds can live together in peace and prosperity."
