Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 217,000 jobs.  With businesses adding 216,000 jobs, this marks the 51st consecutive month of private sector job growth:

“Our economy continues to make progress.  But there is more we can and should be doing to create jobs, strengthen the middle class, and build an economy that works for everyone, not just the wealthy.

“Millions of American families are reeling thanks to House Republicans' refusal to renew the emergency unemployment insurance they rely on to weather the crisis of long-term unemployment.  Republicans continue to block the increased minimum wage that would give a long overdue pay raise to hard working men and women and lift millions out of poverty.  And their debilitating dysfunction and inaction may cause yet another manufactured crisis, as the Highway and Transit Trust Fund runs out of money – threatening critical construction jobs and infrastructure projects in communities across the country.

“Our economy cannot afford Republicans' breathtaking disregard for working Americans.  It is time for Republicans to end their relentless partisan sideshows and work with Democrats on the priorities of the American people: renewing emergency unemployment insurance, raising the minimum wage, passing comprehensive immigration reform and creating jobs.”
